Wichitas Galichia Heart Hospital Offers Cutting-Edge Care
Published Aug 17, 2009

Galichia Heart Hospital, which opened in 2001, delivers world-class care.
Wichita residents can rest easy knowing that no matter where they live‚ a host of top-notch medical facilities – including several specialty hospitals – is just a few minutes away.
Galichia Heart Hospital‚ for example‚ focuses on the workings of the heart and delivers world-class care right here in Wichita. Started in 2001 by cardiology research pioneer Dr. Joseph Galichia‚ the hospital added a 14-bed emergency room‚ a sleep lab and the newest high-resolution heart-imaging technology in 2006.
The emergency room has low nurse-to-patient ratios and provides the only emergency-room presence on the north east side of the city.
“We are licensed as a general acute care hospital‚ so it just seemed logical to add emergency services‚” says Alisa Crawford‚ vice president-human resources and business development for Galichia Heart Hospital. “We can treat anything from minor lacerations to strokes and heart attacks.”
Galichia’s new sleep lab provides an evaluation of patients’ sleep habits six days a week and helps treat problems such as sleepapnea‚ which has been linked to cardiovascular disease.
The heart hospital was the first in Wichita to get a 64-slice CT scanner‚ which allows doctors to see high-resolution images and three-dimensional renderings of heart and arterial tissues.
Along with the new additions‚ Galichia Heart Hospital offers surgery‚ a cardiac catheterization lab‚ an electrophysiology lab‚ a congestive heart failure clinic‚ respiratory care‚ an eight-bed intensive care unit and other services.
The hospital has about 400 employ ees‚ including nearly 180 physicians on the medical staff.
Another specialty medical facility‚ Kansas Spine Hospital‚ is the area’s most comprehensive spinal diagnosis and treatment center – a blend of advanced technology and first-class amenities. In addition to a full-time staff of nation ally renowned neurosurgeons‚ neuro-radiologists‚ orthopedic surgeons and anesthesiologists‚ the hospital offers front-door parking‚ gourmet dietary room services and wireless Internet service in every room.
“Patients receive the highest quality of care‚ including a high nurse-to-patient ratio‚” says Robin Crawford‚ chief financial officer for Kansas Spine Hospital.
In 2006‚ Kansas Spine Hospital started offering balloon kyphoplasty‚ a minimally invasive treatment for spinal fractures caused by osteoporosis or cancer. The procedure helps stabilize spinal fractures‚ correct spinal deform ity‚ reduce pain and improve mobility.
Kansas Spine Hospital also was the first fully digital hospital in Kansas and the first to integrate its electronic med ical records system with physician offices.
Recent additions to the hospital campus include a medical office building‚ allowing the facility to offer a comprehensive and conservative approach to spine-related problems. Future plans include teaching programs for surgeons.
