Published Aug 17, 2009

As the second-largest privately held company in the world‚ Cargill has a mammoth workforce‚ currently at about 142‚000 in 61 countries.

The Minneapolis-based company’s subsidiary in Wichita‚ Cargill Meat Solutions‚ which produces‚ markets and distributes red meat products‚ knows the value of making that workforce as diverse as possible.

“I think overall our leaders realize that for us to be successful moving forward‚ it’s essential for us to have a diverse workforce‚” says Amy Williams‚ the Valuing Differences program man ager based in Wichita. “They know the importance of bringing in new‚ diverse talent with new‚ diverse ideas. They see the overall value; we’re not just doing it for the warm fuzzies. It will improve the bottom line.”

Williams estimates that half of the workforce at Cargill Meat Solutions – approximately 800 people – is diverse‚ with people of different backgrounds‚ races‚ genders and nationalities‚ as well as a host of different academic degrees.

“We’ve been very successful in hiring talent from the business schools‚” Williams says of the program. “It’s not just all ag majors anymore.”
